Soundtrack review: The murder pact (Matthew Llewellyn – 2015)

murderpact

“The murder pact” is a new spin on an Edgar Allan Poe story “The tell-tale heart” which now revolves around four friends whose promising future at a prestigious university is jeopardized when they witness the accidental death of their classmate. As another student reveals she knows about their involvement, the friends panic and start to plot her murder. The score is written by Matthew Llewellyn and it’s always nice to get a score from him. Since he’s come out of Brian Tylers’s team to be a solo composer himself he’s constantly delivered good scores.

If you’ve been reading my reflections on film music you know that I have a soft spot for electronic ambient music, for the darkness of the synth and for that dreamy and ghostly mood. I am an 80s kid who grew up in that raw electronic wasteland so every time a score comes along which embraces this sound I instantly travel back in time to that favorite playground of mine. My nostalgia is alive and I just dream. Yes, Matthew Llewellyn, it was a great idea to go with this sound. After all it is a story about darkness and shadows so why not go down this road.

I am jumping with joy as “The murder pact” progresses. “Chasing a ghost” sounds like a throwback to old arcade game tunes and I don’t want it to end. We’ve been spoiled this year with a few fully electronic scores but there’s something special about this one for me. I don’t need more than what the composer did right here to be happy. This is one gorgeous score, a dark silk drape that casts various shadows depending on how you look at it, a multi layered musical delight which give me the feeling of being weightless and floating in a world full of sharp corners and stars.

I admit that I am so into this score, I am so far away in my nostalgic fantasy that even my words float away from me. I don’t make an effort to catch them because I don’t need them anymore. Matthew Llewellyn’s music speaks for itself and if you are a fan of an electronic score done right take this one and put it on your favorite mental shelf because you will need regular access to it. I know I will keep it very close and I will return to it very often. Brilliant, brilliant composition, one of the nicest surprises of the year and one of the most successful musical time machines built lately. Thank you, Matthew Llewellyn!
