Soundtrack review: Forza Motorsport 6 (Kaveh Cohen and Michael Nielsen – 2015)

“Forza Motorsport “6 is a racing video game developed by Turn 10 Studios and published by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One. It is the sixth installment in the Forza Motorsport series, and was released worldwide on September 15, 2015. It is the third Forza video game released for the Xbox One, and the only Forza game released in the franchise’s 10th anniversary. Forza Motorsport 6 features new gameplay elements, such as weather driving, which brings gameplay effects to the game. In order to model realistic water effects, developers visited real-world tracks to see puddles formed during rain events. The game also features a story mode called “Stories of Motorsport”, which offers approximately 70 hours of gameplay. Forza Motorsport 6 features more than 450 cars. The score was written by Kaveh Cohen and Michael Nielsen.

Racing games have often been the source of very enjoyable scores. “Need for speed”,”Driveclub” or “The crew” are just a few examples from last year. The way this one starts gives me hope because “The grid” has that trailer album sound that gets the blood flowing. I feel ready to run, race, adrenaline is running high. The composers want to show me right away that there’s more to that in this album and I get a surprisingly emotional theme in “Formation”. Even from the first few cues I connect with the score and I like it that even if the pieces are complex they act like a blank canvas on which I can lay my own thoughts and feelings. This is not a score written with characters in mind; it’s a score written for everybody’s passion, no matter what it might be. There are moments when the stride is high and goes full throttle as if I got that brilliant idea I was waiting for and there are quieter, more melodic moments for the times when I just live what I am doing even if the progress is not yet there.

The racing angle of the game is present in the score through sharp electronic inserts and musical moments when I almost see sparks flying. I love the mood of this score, I love the bursts of energy and I love the motivation I feel when I hear cues like “107%”.  I don’t even know if I should highlight particular cues though because the entire composition is a rollercoaster of adrenaline and emotions and it gives me that knot in the stomach and raises my pulse quite often. Those moments I expected; the surprises are the quiet and emotional pieces that provide much needed balance.

Stripped of all that’s unnecessary, “Forza Motorsport 6” is a lean and entertaining racing game score, one of the best of the genre. It more than justifies the 90 minutes long run time and I could have heard more. Listen to this one because it will surprise and inspire you.
